Everyday is Like Sunday, but Friday I’m in Love

23 May

Ever since Prince died, I’ve wanted to see all the concerts. It really brought home to me that there are only so many opportunities to see my favorite – or not-so-favorite, but iconic – bands, and life is too short to pass them up.

So when Mike surprised me with tickets to see Billy Joel, in a luxury suite no less, I was thrilled. I’d been kicking myself for not buying a cheap seat (I usually go to shows by myself), and then voila, we were sitting there “For the Longest Time” waiting for the “Piano Man” to sing us along his “River of Dreams.”

Less than a week later, I went with a friend and friend of a friend to see The Cure. They were amazing! For me, The Cure has always been a group whose music I like, but whose instrumentation I never thought much about. Watching them in concert, I realized how hard they rock. Robert Smith sounded awesome, the band was tight, and the super long, multiple encore set they played included a lot of deep cuts and fan favorites.

Some years ago, I saw Morrissey play a concert on a Sunday. At one point, he said, “Today being Sunday and all…” and then launched into “Everyday is Like Sunday.” Since we saw The Cure on a Friday, I was holding my breath for “Friday I’m in Love” and they didn’t let me down.

I don’t have any other concerts on the docket anytime soon, but am hoping to change that… even if the band doesn’t have a song for the day of the week their concert falls on.
