No Kitchen? No Problem.

Mike started our kitchen renovation yesterday. Basically, everything must go. All the existing cabinets, all the countertops, all the floor tiles, the soffits, most of the appliances… all going.

Mike found someone on Craigslist who took away all of the granite countertops. The deal was, you come and take them out, they’re yours at no cost. Considering the granite was practically brand new, installed right before we bought our house two years ago at a cost of about $10,000, that was a pretty good deal for the guy who took it away. It was also a good deal for us because we didn’t have to haul it to the dump and pay to get rid of it.

All the cabinet doors and drawers got donated to the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store.

All the cabinets are now littering the dump, soon to be joined by the drywall and plaster Mike is busy knocking out and the ceramic floor tiles that will come up tomorrow.

In the meantime, we’re cobbling together a kitchen that’s a cross between college dorm room and camping.

We have the microwave, toaster oven, crockpot, and grill– all outside on our patio. Our (new) fridge is in the garage, plugged in with all our food in it. To do dishes, I’m using the utility sink in the garage. It’s a low-brow existence, but it works. In fact, I made Easter breakfast today using this set up, which is why we had scrambled eggs (cooked in the microwave), strawberries (washed and sliced at my mom’s house yesterday), and cold bagels. I planned on making Easter dinner at home, but we ended up eating too much at our friends’ where we went for lunch, so we’ll have ham, brussels sprouts (made ’em in the crockpot; they turned out pretty well!), and baked potatoes (I’ll cook them on the grill) tomorrow.

This is supposed to be a five-week project, so stay tuned for updates!
