Michaela’s 3rd Birthday

26 Dec

We had a full house for Michaela’s third birthday party.  Held a couple of days before her actual birthday, we invited about 10 families over to celebrate with us.  The weather was beautiful (again!) and everyone was in good spirits.  We had a Curious George-themed party, meaning there was a Curious George table cloth and yellow streamers and balloons, and some banana accents.  Best of all?  Monkey bread!  We had a caterer make individual-sized monkey breads with George’s face on them and people either ate them at the party as cake or took them home for favors.  Michaela got a special, extra large one.

The other great thing about our party was that we held it at 10 a.m.  When I set the time, I felt like people thought I was crazy.  But here was my reasoning: every toddler party I’ve been to that starts at 1 is kind of a challenge.  Either my kid is napping and we’re late, or the birthday kid should be napping and is therefore tired and grouchy.  It’s a little bit lose-lose.  But at 10 a.m., everyone is awake.  It’s not so early the party hosts have to get up at the crack of dawn to get ready, and you get to enjoy yummy breakfast foods!  We had happy face pancakes, fruit salad, sausage, and banana (because it was a monkey-themed party!) oatmeal.  Those are all foods kids and adults alike enjoy, so everyone was happy.

Mike and I were especially lucky because Nana Laura and Papa Var came out from Colorado to celebrate with us.  Not only did we have a blast throughout the five days there were here, they also worked their tails off during the party.  Between the two of them, they probably make 100 pancakes!

Mike and I enjoyed getting to spend time with our friends and family, and Michaela had fun, too.  Our little guests played on the play structure in the back yard, with Michaela’s kitchen in the living room, or with the toys in Michaela’s bedroom, where Uncle Michael was like the Pied Piper, holding court in Michaela’s room for a variety of children.

Everyone was really generous (in spite of a “no gifts” request!), so Michaela had lots of presents to open after the party.

It was a really lovely day!
