Garden Update

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

As I wrote a few days ago, Mike and I have planted our spring/summer garden.  I am proud to announce that the first of our seeds have started germinating, meaning we’re on track to be enjoying delicious homegrown veggies!

I arranged all of my containers in the same area, to encourage consistent watering.  In the past, we haven’t been very good about watering regularly, which really cuts down on garden productivity!  This picture doesn’t include the jalapenos and the basil I decided to plant after I set out my initial list.  The big pot with the trellis is a blackberry bush that we planted last year.  It’s the only fruit we’re growing.

As you can see, my (from top to bottom) dill, lettuce, and pole beans are all on track.

Stay tuned for additional updates, including- hopefully- recipes for and pictures of delicious things we’ve made with our produce!

Michaela and the mobile

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Ever since we put a mobile above the crib, Michaela has been enamored with it. In this video from yesterday, she’d been staring at it for a half hour already while I dug out the camera… but still, you get the idea!

Michaela Coos!

Michaela has been “coo-ing” for a week or two now, but when she woke up from her nap today, she was in a particularly chatty mood. Here is her smiling and making noise!

Money’s Worth

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Mike and I went to Lowe’s last night and picked up some seeds and a number of already-started plants for this year’s veggie garden.  Each year, we do a garden– usually starting off well and then becoming lazier and lazier about watering, to the point that our harvest is diminished.  But that will not happen this year!  This year, we pledge to be diligent about our garden for two reasons: 1), now that only one of us is working full-time, it doesn’t hurt to save money (and be more healthy) by growing our own veggies and 2), I’m going to blog about our progress, which adds some incentive to actually Make Some.

I’m going to be in charge of some container gardening and Mike is going to take care of the actual plot.  I’m doing:

–dill (love it, and dill potato salad is such a delicious summertime treat!)

–cilantro (we use a ton of it)

–pole beans (grow well in containers)

–eggplant (also allegedly a good container plant)

–lettuce (just because it’s so easy and we planted some last year that is growing again), and

–serrano chilis (another thing we use frequently).

Mike is doing three types of tomatoes (Early Girls, Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes, and beefsteak), cucumbers, and squash (probably acorn, but we haven’t actually gotten that one yet).  We also have some seeds (carrots, watermelon, rosemary) left over from last year that we may plant just for the heck of it.

We spent $16.88 on the seeds and starter plants, so my goal is to get at least that much out of our garden.  Hopefully more.  I think it’s do-able.  I’ll post pictures of our bounty once the harvest is in!

Wildflowers, Part Two

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Mike posted his pictures from our Borrego wildflower trip earlier, so I thought I’d post mine, too.  His are very fancy and artistic.  Mine, not so much.  But they show what happens on the other side of Mike’s camera.

It was windy, so we bundled Michaela up.

This isn’t the most flattering pic of the baby, but I like it anyway.  A mother’s love is blind!

How do you think Mike got all those lovely shots?

3 Months

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Miss Michaela celebrated three months of liberation (from my womb) today.  She wore a beautiful bright pink dress her grandma bought her– size 6 months.  Our little one isn’t that little!
