The Big Three-Oh

Monday, December 11th, 2006

Last weekend, Mike and I went to Vegas along with several friends to celebrate his turning 30.  What a great weekend!  We walked and walked and walked, ate and ate and ate, and had fun, fun, fun.  There was drinking, there was a topless show, for some of us, there were male and female strippers at Olympic Garden.  Most of us came out ahead in our gambling, with “‘Money Maker’ Ally” running the roulette table, “‘Lucky Number 7′ Mike” and “‘Hard 8′ Sheldon” shooting dice at the craps table, and “‘I’m not really a gambler, but I’ll play with $40′ Music” also taking a turn at craps.  Viva Las Vegas!

Don’t Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth

Saturday, December 2nd, 2006

What did we learn today, boys and girls?

Today we learned that the expression “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” comes from an old proverb.  Apparently, as horses get older, their teeth project forward more and more each year.  This means you can tell a horse’s age based on how “promintent” its teeth are.  (Note: from what we read on the internet, that’s also the source for the expression “long in the tooth.”)

Of course, the meaning of the expression is that you should be grateful for your good fortune when you get a gift.

And that’s the lesson of the day!
