Recent Dining Misadventures

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

We haven’t written anything in a while, despite our best intentions.  Lots of excitement going on– Mike’s been busy making arrangements for a visit and promotional campaign shoot with Katie Couric, and I’ve been busy with my work with the City.  We’ve also been hitting happy hour in the Gaslamp a lot lately, one of the benefits (or pitfalls) of me working downtown.

Two quick things:

1) We went to Richard Walker’s Pancake House in downtown San Diego.  The food was okay, the service wasn’t good.  Slow on the coffee refills, waiters with questionable mastery of English, and a jackass of an owner.  Long story, but it can be summarized by saying the owner of the shop doesn’t believe the customer is always right.  Boycott Richard Walker’s Pancake House!

2) A week or so ago, we went with our friend Chris and Lisa and their two lovely children to Terra Restaurant in Hillcrest.  The food was delicious– I had steak, Chris had lamb, Mike had shark, Lisa and the boys enjoyed lobster macaroni and cheese– but the service was awful.  The restaurant wasn’t particularly crowded, but we were stuck in a corner and had to practically stand on the table waving our napkins like flags to catch the attention of the waitstaff.  I understand that’s probably a consequence of dining in a nice restaurant with children, but it was annoying, especially because the owner of Terra does a lot of community work with a local underperforming (read: full of poor colored kids) school.  Doesn’t rate a boycott, but be warned.
